Papier Mache

Taking pieces of recycled aluminum foil, discarded bottles, cardboard pieces or styrofoam as the foundation, I sculpt original whimsical Santa figures using papier mache.  I never know how they will look until painted and antiqued.  Some of the faces are so comical, I have to laugh!

The papier mache process is a lengthy one. Once the mache is mixed it must be used within a day or two for optimal results.  The figures are partially created with the exception of the bottom, and left to air dry.  Once dry, the bottom is completed.  After a few days of air drying, the figures are based painted and then color is applied.  This is when the Santa comes to life. An antiquing stain is applied to all the nooks and crannies of St. Nick’s face, and as a final touch, a sealer is applied.  St. Nick is then embellished with the tiniest trees, candy canes and presents.

I also create papier mache Santa ornaments made on Southern magnolia pods - funky, fun faces with a quirky charm.
